Patrick Henry

A Son of Thunder: Patrick Henry and the American Republic Title: A Son of Thunder: Patrick Henry and the American Republic || Author: Henry Mayer || ISDN: 0-80213-815-2 || Released: February 1992
While Henry Mayer exaggerates the extent to which Patrick Henry was a democrat, he certainly does a brilliant job in portraying the key figure in Virginia politics from the decade before the Revolution to through ratification of the constitution. This book should be on the shelf of everyone interested in the period in which Henry lived.   This is not the sole extensive biography of Henry, but the other book that fits that description -- a three-volume work, including a volume of Henry's surviving letters, by Henry's grandson -- is over a century old.
A Son of Thunder: Patrick Henry and the American Republic Title: Give Me Liberty: The Uncompromising Statesmanship of Patrick Henry || Author: David J Vaughn|| ISDN: 1-888-95222-9 || Released: February 1997
"know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!" These compelling words from a speech delivered by Patrick Henry in 1775 at the second Virginia Convention embody the spirit of American courage and patriotism. The speeches of the 'orator of liberty' fueled the fire of the struggle for American Independence. This insightful look at one of our country's most colorful and verbal forefathers will deepen every readers' appreciation for the leaders in our past and strengthen their understanding that, even today, freedom isn't free.

Paul Revere

A True Republican: The Life of Paul Revere Title: A True Republican: The Life of Paul Revere || Author: Jayne E Triber || ISDN: 1-558-49294-1 || Released: May 1998
Portraying the man behind the myth, A True Republican goes beyond the famous "ride" to explore Paul Revere's larger role in the American Revolution, the evolution of his political thought, and his transformation from Revolutionary artisan to entrepreneur in the early republic. Jayne E. Triber's insightful reading of both primary and secondary sources-including government documents, Masonic records, and Revere's personal and business papers-illuminates the social, cultural, and economic factors that shaped Revere's Revolutionary activities as well as his ardent interpretation of republicanism. Through the lens of one man's life, Triber explores the meaning and attraction of republicanism for artisans, the social structure of Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary America, the importance of Free-masonry, and the development of political parties in the newly formed republic.

Samuel Adams

Samuel Adams: THe Father of American Independence Title: Samuel Adams: The Father of American Independence || Author: Dennis Fradin || ISDN: 0-39582-510-1 || Released: April 1988
My wife and I like to read books on American history to our sons (ages 7 and 8) and were absolutely delighted with this book. Samuel Adams was one of the most important of the patriot leaders, but one about whom little is said these days. That is too bad because no one was a truer, more consistent believer in freedom than he was. Samuel Adams opposed England's taxes and mercantilist trade restrictions; he was just as vociferous an opponent of slavery. Fraidin's writing is clear and easily understood by children, but this is not a childish book. The parents enjoyed and got as much out of it as did the children did. If you think it is important for young Americans to know the history and philosophy of our independence, this book is one give them.
